Belmont Opens Application Process For Vacant Council Seat

Following the death of 50-year-old Eric Reed, government leaders must fill the city council seat.

BELMONT, CA — Following the recent death of Belmont City Councilman Eric Reed, city officials announced they are looking for applicants to fill his seat on the dais. Current councilmembers will appoint a person to the roll, which ends in November 2018, in the new year.

"Interested applicants must be registered to vote in Belmont and are required to submit an application on a form provided by the City along with a resume of education and experience along with a 400-500 word statement indicating the applicant’s intent to apply and why they should be selected to fill the Council Vacancy," an announcement from the city stated.

Application forms are now available online. You can find them digitally via the the city's website or in person at the Belmont City Clerk’s Office. They must be filled out and turned in by noon on Monday, Jan. 8.

Reed, who had served on the City Council since 2013 and as mayor in 2016, died Dec. 8 at home with his family by his side following an extended battle with cancer. He had recently celebrated his 50th birthday, according to the city.
