UPDATED: Belmont Road Closed After It Collapses

Officials say that part of the roadway collapsed in Wednesday's storm.

By Bay City News Service:

A road in Belmont that closed Wednesday because of a collapsed storm drain could remain closed until next week while crews make repairs, according to a police captain.

Authorities at 12:17 p.m. closed Middle Road between El Camino Real and Cypress Avenue after 40 feet of a storm drain gave way, Belmont police Capt. Pat Halleran said.

The collapse undermined the structural integrity of the road, Halleran said.

The closure could continue until next Tuesday while Caltrans crews repair the damaged storm drain, the captain said.

He said Caltrans has jurisdiction over the repairs because the storm drain is under El Camino Real, also known as state Highway 82 in the area, but that city officials are coordinating closely with the state agency.

The closure has caused problems for residents in the area, many of whom use Middle Road to get to the main thoroughfare of El Camino Real, Halleran said.

He said signage is in place to guide motorists to detours around the closure.
