BELMONT, CA – An elderly man was hit and killed while crossing a Peninsula thoroughfare this week, as he crossed a dimly lit section of the roadway, police say. The 74-year-old was not in a crosswalk.
According to Belmont Police Capt. Patrick Halleran, it happened around 6 p.m. Monday in the 500 block of El Camino Real. The victim, who was described as a transient, was pronounced dead at the scene.
"The driver told investigators that he was driving his white 1996 Honda Civic with traffic, in the left southbound lane of El Camino from Davey Glen Road," Halleran said in a news release. "As he was going through the 500 block, a man in dark clothing suddenly crossed in front of him toward the center island. The driver attempted to avoid the collision, but was unable to stop before striking the pedestrian."
