For a high-schooler, summer is no longer all about fun and games. It is in fact a precious time to volunteer, work, or explore other extra-curricular activities outside of school. Now, I know that summer work isn't anyone's idea of fun, but utilizing and taking advantage of the two months off can really make a difference during the college application process. From what I have heard, colleges want "go-getters" or kids who are willing to put in a little extra time and effort to pursue their dreams. Therefore, my advice to all of my peers (including myself) is to turn off the TV, get off the phone, and start looking for opportunities.
The first step of finding a valuable summer internship or job is to ask yourself "What am I interested in?" or "What would I like to do for the rest of my life?" Once you have come up with a rough idea of what the answer is (ex. law, science, etc.), then you can begin your search. For me, law is the direction that I would like to go after high-school. So, to find internship opportunities in my area, I simply typed "Law Firms in the Bay Area" into my search engine. What my search gave me was a list of businesses and their contact information. I then created a uniform message to send out, and got into contact with around 50 different law firms in my area. Once I had sent out the emails, all I had to do was wait. Essentially, the process of finding an internship or job was long and tedious, but the payoff will be gold in the eyes of colleges everywhere.
I wish the best of luck to my fellow peers who are in the process of, or just starting their search for an internship.
Good luck,
Sage
