- Lock it up: Keep doors, windows, and all other points of entry into your home locked.
- Double it up: Consider using secondary window locks, like a sliding window lock, window bar, or even something simple like a ruler or dowel in the track.
- Close it up: Close blinds and curtains when you leave. Remember, whatever a thief can see from the outside may be worth the risk for them to get inside.
- Park it: If you have a car not driven for the day and is not garaged, park it in the driveway. •
- Signs, Signs, Signs: Alarm systems are very helpful. Simply having signs advertising your home is equipped with an alarm helps to deter theft.
- Man’s Best Friend: If you have a dog, the intimidation and/or noise produced by your pet has the potential to be a significant deterrent. Very few burglaries are completed in homes where a dog is present. Consider posting a “Beware of Dog” sign as well. This works even if you don’t have a dog.
- Trust Your Instincts: Get to know your neighbors. Know who belongs and who does not. If you see someone or something suspicious, REPORT IT immediately.
