Singing with Strong Abdominal Support

Let’s talk about your belly!  Having a strong abdomen for singing is key to singing well.  When you breathe in, your belly will expand out. As you sing, your job is to use those ab muscles to keep that belly out.  This is what supports your voice.

The higher the note you want to sing, the more belly you use.  To strengthen your singing belly muscles, try laying on the floor with a book between your sternum and belly button.  Breathe in and make the book go up. Then, sing and keep the book up there with your muscles.  You can also try standing and tying a stretchy scarf tightly around your abdomen. Push  out against it while you sing.
