Snow Possible in Belmont for First Time in 35 Years

The National Weather Service says Belmont and other parts of San Mateo County could see snow for the first time since the mid-1970s.

There's a chance Belmont could see snow tonight or Friday night for the first time since about 1976 as a cold storm passes through the Bay Area, a National Weather Service forecaster said.

Rain has been dampening Belmont throughout the day and is expected to continue into the night, with lows in the lower 40s anticipated, forecaster Diana Henderson said.

Winds of about 5 to 10 mph are expected later today, and will likely increase to 10 to 20 mph tonight.

And later in the night, Belmont may receive a dusting of snow, she said.

Weather on Friday will likely be the same as today, with showers and highs in the upper 40s anticipated.

Friday could also bring snow at elevations of about 1,000 feet, as well as some areas around sea level.

"It’s kind of hard to say right now," Henderson said.

On Saturday, Belmont is expected to be partly cloudy with a chance of showers and snow showers. Highs in upper 40s and winds of 5 to 10 mph are anticipated.

Clear skies with highs in the mid-50s are expected on Sunday.

The is reminding residents to drive carefully, as the possibility of ice on roadways increases.

Belmont police Lt. Pat Halleran said drivers should be wary of black ice, which isn't visible on the roadways. Automatic sprinklers along Ralston Avenue could also pose a danger as they could create ice on the street.

Residents should stock up on batteries and food as well, Police Chief Don Mattei said.
