SOFTBALL: Scots Hammer Mills 17-1

Carlmont improves to 4-0 in Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division with road rout of Vikings; slugging Scots have scored 37 runs in last four games.

The Score: Carlmont 17, Mills 1.

The Star: Carlmont High’s Shawna McDonough had a monster day at the plate – going 4-for-5, with three runs and an RBI on Thursday. The sophomore second baseman executed textbook bunts in two of her first three at-bats. McDonough showcased an innate base-running ability which allowed visiting Carlmont to load the bases several times in the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division game.

The Turning Point: Carlmont was superior during the entirety of the game, but the beast awakened in the fourth inning, putting up eight runs on seven hits as 12 batters went to the plate. The Scots’ hitting onslaught lasted nearly 30 minutes – and by the end, Carlmont led 14-1.

The Quote: “It felt great to get that hit, my teammates did a good job getting on base and all I needed to do was hit it away from the defense.” – Carlmont center fielder Janelle Shiozaki, on her triple in the fourth inning which brought in three of her teammates.

What’s Next? Carlmont will visit Half Moon Bay on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

The Bottom Line: Carlmont’s offense was a juggernaut, hitting in each and every way – line drives, slow-rollers, bunts; they all resulted in a big play. If hitting is contagious, today was an epidemic -- the Scots batted .606 as a team, only striking out once.

Notes: Shiozaki went 2-for-3 with a triple and four RBIs, arguably the engine to the Scots’ eight-run assault in the fourth inning. … Freshman Rebecca Faulkner got the start in the circle and recorded five strikeouts in three innings of work. Ace Aurora Stottler only went 1-for-5 at bat, but made sure to silence the Mills’ offense in the next two innings. … The Scots have now outscored their last four opponents 37-6.
