Think you are tone deaf? Think again!

Ever been called “tone-deaf” or know some folks who are?  Many voice teachers will turn away aspiring singers who can’t match pitch, assuming that they just can’t do it.  I’ve found that, in literally all cases of “tone-deafity” that have come my way, it’s just a matter of helping the student understand what they are listening FOR.  In most cases, just having students really listen to a simply played melody line, and then “audiate” (hear the melody in their head) clearly will fix things over time.  Occasionally, a student will be singing the bass or other instrumental line in a song, so just moving their attention to the melody line works nicely!
