
One of the questions I get asked the most often is “Where do I look when I am in the audition?” The nice thing about theatre is that there is a very specific protocol: You look at the directors when you are introducing yourself and your piece, and then you look slightly over their heads (as you visualize the person who your character is talking to).
Pop auditions are a different animal. When auditioning for shows like X-Factor or American Idol, some judges actually prefer that you look right at them while you are singing. Others (like myself) find it creepy to have someone staring in their eyes for that long. Best bet is to try to read the judges, but if you feel weird about one of them, do what you are most comfortable with.
