Would-Be Belmont Robber, Scared Off by Resident, Sought: Police

BREAKING: Police are asking that the public take a look at the attached composite sketch.

BELMONT, CA – Belmont police asked for the public's help this week in finding a man who they say tried to burglarize a local home – but took off running when confronted by a resident.

According to Belmont Police Capt. Patrick Halleran, it happened around noon on Tuesday in the 4100 block of Marsten Avenue.

The resident heard a noise coming from a side door and went to check it out, and soon discovered someone trying to get into their residence, the captain said.

"The suspect fled when confronted by the resident, who immediately ran inside to call 9-1-1," Haleran said in a news release. "Belmont PD units responded and conducted an extensive search of the neighborhood and adjacent canyon area, but the suspect was not found."

The man was described as a white adult, between 30-40 years old, with a thin build and short 'messed up' salt-and-pepper hair. He had an "unkempt" look and a mustache, Halleran said.

"He was wearing a purple shirt with unknown white lettering on the front, dark jacket and jeans," the captain said. "No suspect vehicle was seen or heard."

Now, police are hoping someone may either recognize the man above – or possibly have area surveillance camera footage that may have captured his image. Anyone who may recognize him from the attached sketch is asked to call Belmont police at 650-595-7400 or email them at police@belmont.gov.
