Alamitos Bay Underwater Cleanup Day Planned

Special guests will include Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry, son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry.

The Aquatic Capital of America organization is participating in the 25th Annual Coastal Cleanup day, Saturday, Sept. 20, teaming with Roddenberry Adventures and Deep Blue Scuba & Swim Center for an underwater cleanup at Alamitos Bay.

The Alamitos Bay Underwater Cleanup is a free, family-friendly event helping to keep Alamitos Bay clean from debris and healthy for future generations to enjoy. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and activities for divers and non-divers alike will include music, food, prize raffles and community exhibits. Special guests will include Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry.

Divers participating in the one-tank shore dive must register with Deep Blue for the event and complete necessary waivers forms in advance. Call time for divers is 8:00. The dive activities, which are free for registered participants, include an underwater scavenger hunt and a Trashy Diver contest for items such as trash collected “Most Likely to be Found on the USS Enterprise” and “Most Unique Item.”

California Coastal Cleanup Day is an annual statewide beach, coastal, and inland waterway cleanup held throughout the state. Every year, on the third Saturday in September, people join together at sites all over the world to take part in Coastal Cleanup Day.
