Delaney & Food!

Guide Dogs in Training must be able to walk by tasty morsels on the ground!

So, there we are seated at the movie theater right next to the aisle with Delaney below my seat and all of a sudden, I hear Delaney chomping on something.

We had made it all the way through the line to buy popcorn, inside the theatre and walked by I dont know how many pieces of popcorn.

We were doing so well until someone walking up the stairs tripped and their Extra Large Popcorn cascaded everywhere with most of it landing right in front of Delaneys nose.  We've got some more training to do!

Being a Guide Dog means your Dog must be able to walk by any piece of morsel, not lunge for it, not grab it, not sniff it, basically not even bat an eye or acknowledge it.

This includes wrappers on the ground, chewed gum underneath tables and seats, food in the hands of others, and food left on the kitchen counter.

Keep in mind dogs have an amazing sense of smell, they are able to identify smells up to 10,000 times better than humans.  Until you have a Guide Dog in Training, you have no idea how many good smelling morsels are out there waiting to be discovered.  When we are out and about, I now have a eagle eye out for any tasty morsels that may be lurking so I can be prepared to retrain Delaney should I need to!
