To Market with Sascha Bos

Every Sunday the Alamitos Bay Marina Parking Lot (6584 E. Marina Drive) turns into a bustling Farmer's Market and Arts & Crafts Fair.

Last Sunday after breakfast, my boyfriend Kyle, my friend Eduardo and I rode our bikes from my house to the Farmer's Market (Alamitos Bay Marina Parking Lot; 9am-3pm) on a route which brought us views of the water and cool breezes. Once there, we locked our bikes and wandered through the Market. Kyle and I each bought a loaf of Old Town Baking Co's amazing strawberry banana bread, and then we headed down to the Arts & Crafts portion of the Market so that I could get a henna tattoo from my friend Cecilia. The Loving Hands Henna booth is a cozy sanctuary decked out in fabrics and fresh flowers (from the Farmer's Market, of course) and Cecilia offers a range of beautiful tattoos, mostly in the $5-$10 range.

While Cecilia was working on my tattoo, my parents arrived at the market on their bikes (my family is trying Car Free Sundays). As my henna dried, we walked around the Arts & Crafts fair, admiring some crocheted objects and Japanese dishtowels. My mom and I both purchased organic cotton yoga t-shirts from No Resistance Wear before we stopped for lunch.

We joined Kyle's parents for Thai food and tacos at an umbrella-covered picnic table between the Arts & Crafts Fair and the Market. After Kyle and I played with the kitties available for adoption (Kyle loves kitties), we headed back to the Market for salad, flowers, and Mabel's banana pudding.

It was a beautiful, fun-filled morning - and a welcome change from driving in a stuffy car to the nearest freezing cold and florescent-lighted supermarket. The Farmers Market is an awesome community and culinary experience, and great fun for people of all ages. I hope to see you there this Sunday!

P.S. There are tons of Farmers Markets on different days of the week all around Long Beach. This one happens to be my personal favorite, but you should try them all! And if you like the small outdoor market vibe, you should also check out the Patchwork Indie Arts & Crafts Festival, a bi-annual handmade crafts fair.
