What Surfers Know
It gets easier everyday to be overwhelmed by the increasingly grim economic news but surfers might know something we all should learn.

We are confronted nearly everyday lately with upsetting economic news. There appears to be a conga line of nations waiting to go bankrupt with Greece leading the way, banks jacking their customers with ever increasing fees and interest rates, somehow we are having, not just a regular recession, but a double-dip recession which, sadly, has absolutely nothing to do with extra scoops of ice cream.
I'm no economist but even I know people are afraid. Even people with secure jobs are afraid and are spending less. It is a seemingly self-fulfilling prophecy in which the fearful who can spend, don't, causing greater losses resulting in an ever slowing economy. Sometimes I think all we need is just a little hope because a little hope would inspire confidence and confidence inspires trust. And what a grand dream trust would bring, right?
When I shot pictures for the little small town paper, back in the day, the editor told me I needed to have 3 or 4 enterprise pictures in each edition. An enterprise picture is one not related to a story, just something odd or quirky that people might like to see. I believe now, as I did then, that opportunities for enterprise photos would arise in the proportion that I looked for them. And, by and large, that was true. I always had enough.

I am not a surfer but what I believe surfers know is that the wave they just rode in on will not be their last. They know that, not only will there be another wave to ride in, but their will be endless waves whether they are there to ride them or not. Sure, not all waves will be perfect, but there will ALWAYS be waves.
So maybe we are not riding anything in right now exactly. Maybe, we are slitting on our boards waiting, or paddling hard to get to a better spot, or maybe we are just venturing in for the first time. What surfers already know, what we all need to remember is, there will ALWAYS be waves.
