City Officials Warn Public of Utility Bill Scam

The scammers try to attain personal financial information from Long Beach Utility customers.

Long Beach city officials are warning the public about a nationwide scam that aims to trick people into providing personal financial information under the guise that the federal government will pay their utility bills.

Currently, there is no such federal program in place, according to Long Beach city officials. The swindle involves the scammers providing bogus bank routing numbers for victims to use.

Long Beach city officials investigating this matter have provided a warning notice on their Utility Billing Web Site, and are reminding all customers “to be wary of scams that sound too good to be true, or promise something for nothing,” according to a statement.

Authorities are warning residents to protect their personal information at all times, and never divulge their social security numbers or any other personal financial information.
