Crews Tackle Downtown High-Rise Fire

An elevator motor caused a fire on the 17th floor of the Landmark Square Building.

A burned out motor in an elevator shaft in the Landmark Square Building in downtown Long Beach tonight brought more than 50 firefighters to handle the smoke and fire.

Smoke was reported coming from the 17th floor at the building at 111 W. Ocean Blvd. at 7:15 p.m., said Jake Heflin of the Long Beach Fire Department.

It took firefighters a while to find the source of the smoke which had filled the whole floor with smoke. The fire was extinguished a half hour later and repair crews were called to fix the elevator.
