Join Portfolio Coffeehouse for an afternoon with author Oni Vitandham, author of "On The Wings of A White Horse: A Cambodian Princess's Story of Surviving the Khmer Rouge Genocide", Saturday May 5th, 2-5pm.
“On The Wings of a White Horse" is an inspirational account of the author’s life, from the jungles of Cambodia to the streets of California. A moving account of survival in the face of genocide and personal hardships. It is the story of a child hidden in the jungle by her father and who escapes to become a young orphan and refugee on the streets of America.
Oni Vitandham was born in a jungle cave in the Kompong Speu province of Cambodia, while her mother was in hiding during the Khmer Rouge genocide. Now an American citizen, Oni has become an internationally renowned speaker, following the release of her autobiographical book recounting her experiences as a young child fleeing the horrors of Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge murderous regime. As an advocate for children’s rights and peace everywhere, she has spoken before the United States Congress, and was selected to be a Cambodian representative among a group of invitees from 86 countries at an International Conference of Chief Justices in Lucknow, India. Oni has also written human rights resolutions adopted by the Human Rights commission of the United Nations, and U.S. State Department.
In 1995, she founded the Progressive United Action Association, Inc (PUAAI)—a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting social justice and enriching the lives of Cambodian children through education, health care, HIV/AIDS prevention, and humanitarian relief. During the past 14 years PUAAI has established 17 schools in Cambodia. Among her many humanitarian commendations are a U.S. House of Representatives “Certificate of Special Recognition”, a U.S. Senate’s “Peace Education Certificate”, and she has also been recognized as a Presidential Roundtable Commission honoree.
Completing her undergraduate degree as a student at California State University Dominguez Hills to study Business Finance. She hopes to enter Law School and began working on her next book.
