"Express Yourself" at Long Beach Funk Fest

Summer and Music is ending its summer music festival series with two large fests, one of which is the Long Beach Funk Fest. The event's mission is "Sustaining the Future Through Funk."

Summer and Music (SAM) plays host to the third annual Long Beach Funk Fest Saturday in Downtown Long Beach .

Set for 1 p.m. to 11 p.m., the event will feature well-known funk performers on two stages. In addition to these performances, DJs, various street vendors, and genre-themed activities will keep the whole family feeling the funk.

The event is free to the public and welcome for all ages.

Long Beach Funk Fest will include performances by Fred Wesley & The New JB’s, The Big ol’ Nasty Getdown, Steve Arrington (formerly of Slave), drummer Zigaboo Modeliste (of the Meters), Ronkat Spearman’s Katdelic, Delta Nove, Str8 Funk (featuring Patryce Choc’let Banks formerly of Graham Central Station) and Pinot.

Rickey Vincent will emcee at both main stages while the DJs spin for the duration of the event.

Activities for the family to enjoy at this event will include The Lil’ Big Ups kids performance, The Kid’s Zone of Funkativity, an art gallery, live painting and dancing.

For the older crowds, Beachwood BBQ Brewing will sponsor the event’s beer garden and serving a variety of its nationally acclaimed microbrews throughout the evening.

Green Long Beach is co-sponsoring a water filing station and encourages event attendees to bring their own water bottles to the event.

The festivities will take place at Pine Avenue and The Promenade, between Broadway and 3rd Street in Downtown Long Beach. Information on parking in Downtown Long Beach is available here.
