Fire Captain Dies In Long Beach Murder-Suicide: Police

The off-duty captain was a 28-year veteran of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

LONG BEACH, CA – An off-duty Los Angeles Fire Department captain died in a murder-suicide at his Long Beach home over the weekend, authorities said Monday. Wayne Havron, 53, of Long Beach, died at the scene of the shooting and a woman in her 40s, died at a hospital, said coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter. Her name was withheld pending notification of relatives, but police said she was believed to be Havron's wife.

Officers sent to their residence in the 7100 block of Island Village Drive about 10:45 a.m. Saturday recovered a firearm at the scene and were investigating the shooting as a murder-suicide, according to the Long Beach Police Department. Havron was a 28-year veteran of the Los Angeles Fire Department, assigned to Station 51 at Los Angeles International Airport.

"The Los Angeles Fire Department is aware of a tragic incident involving one of its off-duty members that occurred in the city of Long Beach on Saturday Sept. 23rd," LAFD spokesman Peter Sanders said. "We are cooperating with law enforcement during their investigation, and we offer our sincerest condolences to the families of the victims."
