A firefighter suffered a minor knee injury Monday while battling a second-alarm blaze that displaced at least nine people from a Long Beach apartment building.

The fire was ruled accidental and was traced to a portable heating device, said Jake Heflin of the Long Beach Fire Department.

Firefighters dispatched about 12:25 p.m. to the 3400 block of East Ransom Street reported flames on the second floor of the three-story structure and had the fire out at about 1:10 p.m., Heflin said.

The fire was confined to four units, with three of those units sustaining significant damage, Heflin said.
