Girl, 4, Hospitalized, Mother Killed in Long Beach Blaze

The child is in critical condition after firefighters found the pair unconscious in a Long Beach house fire.

A 4-year-old girl remained hospitalized in critical condition today with burns she suffered in a house fire in Long Beach that killed her mother.

The two-alarm fire was reported just after midnight Thursday in a third- floor apartment of a nine-unit, three-story building at 1086 Stanley Ave., Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Jake Heflin said.

A total of four residents lived in the apartment, but only two -- the 47- year-old woman and her daughter -- were home at the time of the fire, Heflin said. They were found unconscious in a bed, he said.

Both suffered burn and smoke inhalation injuries and were taken to a hospital, where the woman succumbed to her injuries Thursday afternoon, Heflin said. The girl is now in the burn unit of Torrance Memorial Medical Center.

Two pet dogs also perished in the fire, which displaced the injured girl’s father and another adult family member, Heflin said.

It took more than 50 firefighters just over 10 minutes to knock down the blaze, Heflin said. The fire started in the apartment’s living room, but the cause remains under investigation, he said.
