Intense House Fire Injures 5 Firefighters, Kills Cat and Dog

A Long Beach blaze caused minor injuries for five fighters while an 85-year-old man suffered smoke inhalation.

Five firefighters suffered minor injuries while battling a two-alarm house fire today in Long Beach.

A dog and a cat were killed during the fire at 3400 East 1st Street and an 85-year-old man was rushed to an area hospital with complaints of smoke inhalation, said Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Jake Heflin.

Firefighters dispatched to the two-story home at 11:55 a.m. had the fire out about 1 p.m., Heflin said.

A firefighter who suffered a shoulder injury was taken to an area hospital. Three firefighters who suffered minor burns and a firefighter who suffered a cut to his hand were sent to an occupational health clinic for further evaluation, Heflin said.

The 85-year-old man and his 27-year-old son -- who was not home at the time of the fire -- were left temporarily homeless, he said.

A cause of the fire and damage estimates were under investigation, he said.
