Man Gets 25 Years for Shooting Code Enforcement Officer
A Long Beach man was sentenced Tuesday for shooting a code enforcement officer in the face, blinding him and triggering a 7-hour standoff.

A Long Beach man was sentenced today to 25 years in prison for shooting a city code enforcement inspector in the face, causing him to lose sight in his left eye, during a nearly seven-hour standoff.
Long Beach Superior Court Judge Marc C. Kim handed down the maximum term for Anthony Glen Gorospe, 53, who pleaded no contest in late February to an attempted murder charge and two counts of assault on a peace officer with a semiautomatic firearm.
“We were only out there because the neighbors asked us to come out,” victim Brett Bush said, adding that he “didn’t know if I was going to live or die.”

Gorospe fired from inside his door, striking the Long Beach code enforcement inspector, then 51, near the left eye on July 5, 2012, at the defendant’s property in the 6100 block of North John Avenue, which had received several code violations.
Gorospe fired several more rounds while barricaded inside the home and repeatedly yelled for officers to shoot him. No police officers were injured.
