Man Pleads No Contest in Crash That Killed Passenger

Nolan Campbell was sentenced to nine years.

A Cerritos man was sentenced today to nine years in state prison for causing a crash that killed a passenger in Long Beach last year.

Superior Court Judge Richard R. Romero imposed the term on Nolan Campbell, 37, immediately following the defendant’s no plea to one felony count each of vehicular manslaughter and unlawful driving or taking of a vehicle, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Campbell sped away from police near 20th Street and Pacific Avenue in Long Beach after officers tried to conduct a traffic stop last Nov. 24.

When he tried to turn south onto the Terminal Island (103) Freeway from westbound Pacific Coast Highway, the pickup truck went over the embankment and flipped over several times. Campbell and his passenger, Ra Thongphun, were both ejected from the vehicle

Thongphun, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Campbell tried to flee, but was apprehended a short distance away and was treated at a local hospital.
