Man Stabbed to Death at Long Beach Metro Station ID'd

LONG BEACH, CA - The coroner's office Monday released the name of a man stabbed to death in a fight with another man at a Metro Blue Line station in Long Beach, with the suspected killer hospitalized in critical condition with self-inflicted knife wounds.

The victim was 46-year-old Robert Goins, who died on the railroad platform April 15 of multiple stab wounds, according to the coroner's website.

It happened shortly after 2 a.m. at the Wardlow Station in the 3400 block of North Pacific Place, the sheriff's department reported. The victim died at the scene. His identity was withheld pending notification of next of kin.

"Transit Policing Division deputies were patrolling the Wardlow Blue Line station platform and came upon two men involved in a physical altercation," a sheriff's statement said.

"One of the men was (lying) injured on the ground," the statement said. "When the other realized deputy personnel were present, he fled the scene toward West Wardlow Road."

Deputies began looking for the man, assisted by Long Beach Police Department officers.

"LBPD personnel located the uncooperative suspect as he fled on foot and utilized several less lethal weapons before he was taken into custody, approximately one half mile from the crime scene," the statement said.

The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment of self-inflicted knife wounds and was listed in critical condition, the sheriff's department reported. His name was not immediately released.

The Wardlow Station was closed while an investigation was conducted, and buses were brought in to accommodate rail passengers.
