Long Beach residents will have a chance this fall to vote on an initiative that, if passed, would abolish the in California.
Called the Savings, Accountability, and Full Enforcement for California Act, the measure commonly known as the SAFE California Act would immediately commute the sentences of 725 Death Row inmates to life sentences without the possibility of parole.
Also, the measure would make the sentence of life without parole the that California prosecutors could seek, the Associated Press reported.

The measure’s backers say doing away with the death penalty will save California millions of dollars by eliminating the nation's largest death row at San Quentin prison.
California has not put anyone to death since 2006 and is one of 35 states that still carry the sentence.
