2 Boaters Rescued From Jetty Off Mare Island After Boat Sinks

NORTH BAY, CA – Two boaters were rescued early Saturday afternoon near the south end of Vallejo's Mare Island, California Highway Patrol officials said.
A CHP helicopter crew received a call at 1:20 p.m. from the highway patrol's dispatch center of a possible rescue needed because a boat with two people on board was sinking.
The crew responded and located the sinking boat and the two boaters, who were standing on a rock jetty.

The two were trapped by a rising tide and waves were crashing around them, CHP officials said.
The helicopter crew notified officials with the U.S. Coast Guard, who dispatched a boat to the scene. The helicopter crew also notified Vallejo Fire Department officials who had firefighters establish a landing zone on
Mare Island.

In winds exceeding 30 mph, the helicopter crew hoisted both boaters, one by one, from the jetty to the landing zone. Neither boater was injured.
The boaters craft sunk before the rescue was complete.
