2 Structure Fires In 8 Hours Keep Vallejo Firefighters Busy

With 2 crews of Vallejo firefighters already in Monterey County fighting a 15,000 acre fire, staffing got interesting when fires broke here.

VALLEJO, CA - Vallejo firefighters responded to two structure fires within about eight hours Sunday night and early Monday morning, a fire engineer said.

At 9:37 p.m. Sunday, they responded to a two-alarm fire in a vacant, boarded-up former residence in the 600 block of Tregaskis Avenue in central Vallejo, Fire Engineer Kevin Brown said.

The building with layers of siding had sustained moderate damage in a fire in February, and the blaze Sunday was controlled within 45 minutes. Firefighters were at the scene until 12:30 a.m. Monday, and the building likely will be torn down, Brown said.

The second fire reported at 5:40 a.m.Monday was in the 600 block of Pueblo Way in south Vallejo. The one-alarm fire started outside a garage and spread to rafters but was contained to the garage, according to Brown.

It was controlled within 20 minutes and the residents were able to remain in their home, Brown said.

The Vallejo Fire Department has sent two strike teams to the nearly 15,000-acre Soberanes Fire in Monterey County, Brown said.

"We're not short-staffed but have had to scrambled to be fully staffed," he said.
