A Ship on the Strait: Luigi Lagrange

The Luigi Lagrange is a Liquefied Petroleum Gas or LPG carrier.  She came through the Carquinez Strait on Friday, April 20, 2012 on her way to the Port of Stockton.  She was built at the Okpo Shipyard, Geoje Island, Korea and launched in 2006.

The Luigi Lagrange was originally called the Maersk Jewel.

On her way to Stockton, the Luigi Lagrange was escorted by three U.S. Coast Guard boats that were enforcing a 500 yard safe zone around the ship.  According to Ensign Mark Leahy of the U.S. Coast Guard, the safe zone was required because the ship was carrying 15,500 metric tons of anhydrous ammonia, a commonly used fertilizer.
