Artists Sought For Benicia Public Art Projects

Benches and trash cans are among the canvases.

BENICIA, CA — Officials with the city of Benicia's Arts and Culture Commission have put out a call for artists to turn traffic control boxes into works of art, city officials said Friday. City arts and culture officials want most of the traffic control boxes to become one-of-a-kind works of public art.

The officials have also put out a second call for artists who would like to practice their craft on benches and trash cans in the city's historic and non-historic neighborhoods.

The two calls make up the first step in a comprehensive public art initiative that will include murals, city entrances, sculptures and art on more benches and trash cans.
