Benicia Awarded $1.2M For Roadway Safety Improvements
The city's projects were among 351 applications for federal Highway Safety Improvement Program grants.

From The City of Benicia: The City of Benicia has been awarded two Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) Grants totaling $1,246,000. In the recent HSIP funding cycle, 351 applications were received requesting $418 million of Federal HSIP funds. On December 12th, 2018, the project selection results were released and 221 projects, totaling $182 million in Federal HSIP funds, were selected for funding. The two Benicia projects that were awarded grant funding are listed below:
Upgrade to guardrails and end treatments at 28 locations throughout Benicia - $996,000
Pedestrian improvements at the intersections of West 5th Street and Military West and Hastings Drive and London Drive will include enhanced pedestrian crossings, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) curb ramps, rectangular rapid flash beacon (RRFB) system, median island, sidewalks and other relevant elements - $250,000

The design of both projects is estimated to begin in Fiscal Year 2019-20 and construction will begin within Fiscal Year 2020-21. The Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) is one of the core Federal aid programs in the Federal Surface Transportation Act, Fixing America's Surface Transportation Act (FAST), which was signed into law on December 4, 2015. The purpose of the HSIP program is to achieve a significant reduction in traffic fatalities and serious injuries on all public roads, including non-State-owned public roads.
HSIP funds are eligible for work on any public road or publicly owned bicycle or pedestrian pathway or trail that improves the safety for its users.
