Prior to the game Mauch admitted he was in a bit of a slump. Head Coach Jim Bowles never considered putting Mauch lower in the line-up. After Mauch's first inning single, the coach explained his reasoning.
"He's a team leader," said Bowles. "Every hitter goes through slumps. The leaders work themselves out of the slump. Hayden has been coming through for us for a long time."
