Benicia Clerk Shot And Killed During Suspected Robbery: Cops

Benicia police say a clerk at Rose Market was found dead of apparent gunshot wounds during a Tuesday night robbery.

BENICIA, CA — A Benicia store clerk was shot and killed Tuesday night during a suspected robbery, the Benicia Police Department announced on social media.

At around 10:04 p.m. Tuesday, officers responded to an alarm call at Benicia’s Rose Market on the 2000 block of Columbus Parkway. Officers say they found a clerk at the business unresponsive with an apparent gunshot wound, and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived, and investigators believe the shooting happened during an armed robbery. Investigators are reviewing surveillance camera video, but have not released a description of the suspect, CBS San Francisco reports.

“We are deeply saddened by this senseless violence that happened in our community,” Chief Mike Greene said. “We have detectives and every available [resource] working to identify the suspect.”

Police say they are not releasing any further information at the time due to the nature of the investigation and out of respect for the victim’s family.

Police told NBC Bay Area that this marks Benicia’s second homicide of the year, following a full decade without any.
