Each day Benicia Patch will publish submissions to the annual Benicia Love Poem Contest. Readers are encouraged to comment on the poems.

What Would You Think Of Me? by Don Peery

If I were now to take your hand
and lead you to a crystal pool
fed by time's eternal spring -
there to lie upon the grass
among flowers wild with bloom,
covered by their perfumed scent -
would you think me quite the fool
to speak to you of love?

And should I ask of you to come
and walk with me to where the sun
rests upon the ridge to form
a flaming bridge for night to cross -
would you begrudge my  heart to tempt
my timid voice to speak your name
in chorus with the twilight sounds
to whisper of my love?

And if I then could make you laugh
that I might listen to its music
as a perfect string of silvered bells
set to dancing by the wind -
would you think me any less
for the pose I'd strike in jest
by which to stir our minds to humor
and your voice to laughter?

And when you go and I am left
with but the specter of your smile -
and time is measured, not by hours,
but by miles - would you care
if still I dream warm dreams of you;
still cherish random scenes with you,
snatched from moments touched, if not
by love, then by affection?

And would you then still think of me,
when I am here and you are gone?
And would you smile your smile for me,
and laugh you lilting laugh for me,
and hold a special place for me
within your heart until I might
again reach out to take your hand
and by its touch be whole
