Benicia Police Recover Loaded Gun, Marijuana; Arrest Vallejo Man

An officer approached the man's car and smelled marijuana, then discovered the man was sitting on a loaded pistol, Benicia police said.

BENICIA, CA — A gun and multiple large jars of marijuana were recovered by Benicia police Thursday night after an officer decided to approach a car he thought looked suspicious, officials with the Benicia Police Department said.

It all started around 10:15 p.m. at the Vista Point Bridge Head, 1700 Park Road. The officer could smell burnt marijuana coming from the car, police said.

The driver admitted he'd been smoking weed in the car, and told the officer he had a gun, according to Benicia PD.

"During a search of the vehicle several large jars of marijuana and a backpack with ammunition were found," Benicia police officials said. "The pistol was not registered to the suspect and he did not lawfully own it."

Anderson was booked into Solano County jail on suspicion of carrying a loaded firearm in public and possession of marijuana for the purpose of selling it, according to the police department's incident logs, which are made available to the public.

Jail records showed Anderson remained behind bars Friday in lieu of $25,000 bail.

The other person in the car was not arrested and was released from the scene.
