For Benicia Students: Anti-Tobacco Contest Underway

Put on your thinking caps! Design a media campaign and win $500 for your student club or organization in Solano County!

SOLANO COUNTY, CA – Solano County Office of Education, in partnership with the Solano Youth Coalition, is hosting a media contest advocating tobacco avoidance for student clubs and youth organizations serving grades 6-12.

Winning submissions from students can win up to $500 for their club!

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), in the United States, nearly nine out of 10 cigarette smokers first tried smoking by age 18, and each day more than 3,800 youth, aged 18 years or younger, smoke their first cigarette. The Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE) Contest was created to encourage students to explore the impact of tobacco and nicotine products in their schools and communities.

Clubs can submit Public Service Announcement videos focusing on tobacco and nicotine products. The PSAs submitted will be used to help educate students about the dangers of tobacco use in a creative and informative way.

PSA’s should focus on one of the following topics:

  • Counter Advertisement - Respond to or correct misleading tobacco or e-cigarette advertisements
  • Environmental Impact - Expose the damage tobacco and nicotine products have on your community
  • Peer Influence (Peer Pressure) - What are the effects of peer pressure to use e-cigarettes or nicotine products?
  • E-Cigarette Myths - Identify the myths or beliefs about e-cigarettes provide facts that debunk the common beliefs

Deadline for club registration is Nov. 21.
