Big-Rig Ruptures Tank in Fairfield Crash, Causing Fuel Spill

A big-rig that struck a pole in Fairfield this morning has spilled a large quantity of diesel fuel, blocking a roadway and posing a potential environmental hazard to nearby waterways, a fire official said.

The big-rig’s driver was turning out of a parking lot on Enterprise Drive at Woolner Avenue around 8:45 a.m. when she struck a metal pole in the landscaping and damaged the truck’s fuel tank, according to Fairfield Fire Battalion Chief Matt Luckenbach.

No one was injured in the crash, which closed Enterprise Drive completely as of shortly before 10 a.m. Woolner Avenue remains open.

While it was not yet clear exactly how much fuel spilled, the tank holds around 100 gallons and the spill covered an area of around 80 by 40 feet, Luckenbach said.

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife and Solano County Environmental Health Division are responding to assess potential damage to local waterways.

“The big concern is how much fuel got into the storm drains,” Luckenbach said.

“We’ve got big tides happening right now and I can just about see the slough from here,” he added, referring to the nearby Suisun Slough.
