Board To Revisit Ban On Gun Shows At Solano County Fairgrounds

The Solano County Fair Association voted to no longer host gun shows at the fairgrounds but will hold a meeting to revisit the decision.

SOLANO COUNTY, CA— The Solano County Fair Association Board of Directors has called a special meeting dedicated to the question of whether the association will continue to host gun shows at the fairgrounds.

The special meeting has been set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, in McCormack Hall at the Solano County Fairgrounds, 900 Fairgrounds Drive in Vallejo.

The SCFA took action at a meeting in August to no longer host gun shows at the fairgrounds in Vallejo in a move said to have been prompted by Vallejo's high weapons-related crime rate.

Although the Board voted to ban future gun shows, Code of the West Productions was allowed to move forward with two gun shows already planned for Oct. 9-10 and Dec. 4-5 at the fairgrounds.

SCFA Board of Directors President Lee Williams, the only board member who voted against the ban, said since that August meeting, the Board has received a fair amount of feedback from the community as well as a concern about whether the SCFA was in full compliance with the Brown Act.

"The Board has therefore decided to conduct another meeting where the gun show question can be revisited," Williams said. "We believe this will further ensure that anyone who wishes to have their opinion considered before the Board takes its final action may do so."

To attend the Dec. 1 meeting, members of the public should enter through the main gate of the fairgrounds, then follow the signage to McCormack Hall.

"To maximize public participation, our Board has decided to host the December 1st meeting in-person, here at the fairgrounds, in addition to offering a means to attend electronically," SCFA Executive Director Mike Ioakimedes said. "McCormack Hall is large enough to accommodate this meeting while still providing for ample social distancing."

Ioakimedes added that at the time of this news release Friday, the Solano County Fairgrounds was observing the indoor mask mandate of its host city, Vallejo.

For those who are not able to attend the meeting in person, it will be streamed live on Zoom. Here is the meeting link. The Meeting ID is 899 1462 6790 and the passcode is 639203. Members of the public can also dial in by calling 669-900-9128.
