Great ingredients to add to your super food smoothie.

After the first three ingredients in a 'super foods' smoothie, add functional foods that boost your immunity and deliver nutrition that is healing to your body.

First three ingredients for a super food smoothie are: greens, fruit, and nuts. Follow with a liquid so you can fill the space in the blender and have a liquid drink. I use coconut water. Coconut water provides a higher source of electrolytes than any thing else in nature. For a denser or more filling smoothie try oat, hemp seed or almond milk. I also add stevia as a sweetener. If honey is your choice as a sweetener, use it instead. It is loaded with antibacterial properties and pre-biotics and helps to ward off allergies. In that vain, I love to use bee pollen, the closer the source, the better. You can make a super food smoothie without my favorite ingredient: raw cacao, but it has so many benefits, I wouldn’t skip it. It is loaded with vitamin C, anti-oxidants, manganese, and magnesium. Think of cacao powder and cacao beans as helping to amplify the delivery of all these super food ingredients into your cells. Best of all, cacao adds the taste we love, making your super foods smoothie chocolate-flavored and delicious. You might use cacao powder or cacao beans or nibs. Cacao beans and nibs are pretty much the same thing, one is chopped up, either are more of a whole food than cacao powder. The cacao powder is different in that it has had 70% of the butter pressed out. On that note, fat is a great addition to any smoothie as it lowers the glycemic index and keeps you feeling full longer. It also boosts your brain function. Make your smoothie meal last longer (as in time it takes to drink and how long you feel satisfied for) by adding avocado, a small amount coconut oil or olive oil to your smoothie.
