Lunch at the Capitol — Capitol Cafe That Is
C is for Commendable first choice on Capitol Cafe.
"Mom, I'm hungry" prompts me to go through the filofax of restaurants on First Street to suffice my teenage daughter's appetite. I had yet to patron since its arrival in Benicia.
Being able to choose between a burger, sandwich, and/or salad made me wonder why I hadn't set foot in the restaurant before. The service was quick and attentive — my daughter and I found ourselves looking at our dishes within ten minutes of sitting down, and during a pretty peak lunchtime window too.
The sandwich that caught my attention is their Vegan Wrap ($9.50) containing avocado, spinach, tomato, and cucumber layered in hummus. Here is aproportionally sized wrap that will not fill you up but leave you satisfied.

The flavors that stood out the most were the cucumber, tomato, and hummus. I love the freshness and crisp flavors that were combined within the wrap. The hummus was not overpowering, but it was the star of this wrap, with a great texture but no overzealous lemon or garlic flavors. A handful of potato chips — one of the three side choices — went well with the wrap, although their mixed green salad would be a much more healthier choice if you're truly going all-out green and vegan.
The specials at Capitol Cafe are not to be ignored. When I visited, the special was a mahi mahi sandwich. Although I passed, I knew that this First Street newbie is creeping forward amongst its peers with it sandwiches and services. A repeat visit is in the works in the future.
