The first three ingredients in a ‘super foods’ smoothie.

Highly nutritious ingredients and their roles in a super food smoothie.

Starting with the greens; greens enrich the blood, improve the mood, provide vitamins and minerals, and are low in calories. They are live and full of chlorophyll, and fiber. Eat your greens, or put them in a smoothie! The second ingredient: fruit, is sometimes mis-understood as it is a source of sugar. The good news is when in a smoothie you are including the fiber of the fruit. The fiber in the fruit slows down the release of sugars into your system. For fruit that is less of a culprit, if worried about high blood sugar, use berries and green apples (organic please). Fruit, as colorful as it is, has so many anti-oxidants and vitamins, each color benefits different parts of a healthy body, so mix it up a little and try different colors and textures. The third key ingredient in a super food smoothie; nuts and seeds, provide beneficial fats. A variety of fat sources is key to all around good health. A little bit goes a long way with nuts and seeds as they are high in calories. Please choose nuts and seeds that are raw, and minimally handled. Almost all nuts sold in the United States are not raw, even when labeled as such, as our laws prohibit sales of specific nuts that are raw due to parasites and other scares. Don’t use nuts that are cooked in oil and rolled in salt. The valuable oils in nuts and seeds are heat sensitive, so take care in keeping them sealed and away from direct light. Look out for my next blog for the additional beneficial foods that make a super food smoothie super nutritious and the role that cacao plays as a catalyst for helping deliver these super nutrients into your cells.
