Using a giant crane, construction crews installed a new pedestrian crossing over state Highway 4 in Antioch Friday afternoon, which would allow access to the future BART station once it’s completed.

Around 4 p.m., crews began lifting the 145-foot-long and 13-foot-wide metal overcrossing above the newly expanded westbound lanes on Highway 4 at Hillcrest Avenue, according to a BART spokesman. The overcrossing will connect pedestrians directly from an area near Sunset Drive and Hillcrest Avenue to the future BART platform, which would be located in the median of the highway, according to BART spokesman Taylor Huckaby.

Although construction on the BART station has been mostly completed, the station’s new tracks are currently being installed, according to BART. Service at the station is expected to begin in May 2018.

Once open, the new station will serve as the eastern most station in the county and will allow for easier travel for the 250,000 residents of East Contra Costa County, according to officials with the Contra Costa Transportation Authority.

The Antioch BART station is just one element of the $1.3 billion dollar Highway 4 corridor project, CCTA officials said. Other parts of the project include expanding Highway 4 between Pittsburg and Brentwood and adding missing connector ramps to the state Highway 160 interchange, transportation officials said.

The project will help modernize East Contra Costa County by helping reduce traffic congestion and enhancing the quality of life for the area’s residents, according to the CCTA.
