Driver Fatally Struck While Crossing Highway 37 In Vallejo: CHP

California Highway Patrol says the driver walked across the freeway after colliding with a freeway sound wall.

SOLANO COUNTY, CA — A 29-year-old Fairfield man was struck and killed early Sunday morning as he walked across state Highway 37, according to the California Highway Patrol. Investigators believe that moments earlier, at 12:05 a.m., the man was driving a Nissan Altima sedan westbound on SR-37 and collided with a sound wall along the right shoulder and west of the Fairgrounds Drive exit.

The impact sent the Altima across all lanes until the car partially came to rest in the center divider and fast lane of westbound SR-37, Harvey said.

It is believed the man got out of the Altima and walked across westbound lanes to the right shoulder, where he remained for a short time before walking back across the freeway lanes — at which time he was struck by a Jeep Commander that was traveling in the No. 2 westbound lane, Harvey said.

A 25-year-old Vallejo man was driving the Jeep and was not injured in the collision.

A 24-year-old Vallejo woman driving the Honda suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Kaiser hospital in Vallejo for treatment.

The fatal incident remains under investigation; anyone with pertinent information is asked to call the CHP on its non-emergency line 1-800-TELL-CHP (1-800-835-5247) or the CHP Solano Area Office directly at 707-428-2100.

"Relate that you have information for CHP - Solano and Officer Butolph who is handling this investigation," Harvey said. "Any information obtained in regards to this collision will be greatly appreciated."
