Students may choose to work from the observed motif, from reference materials and drawings, and from memory and imagination, depending on a student's interest and level of experience. Instruction will include individual guidance, demonstrations, and group critiques. Where applicable, examples of master paintings from the past as well as modern and contemporary work will be shown and discussed.

For beginning painters, this class will emphasize two things: 1) Learning to see relationships of value, color, and form as observed in a still life set up, and transposing these relationships to the canvas in terms of strong drawing, direct painting, and picture organization; and 2) gaining basic familiarity with sound painting practice with regard to tools, materials, and technique. Both aspects serve as foundations for further personal development and a broad range of painting practices and modes of expression. In general, aspects covered will include: Basic painting materials, mediums, tools, and supports; beginning to learn to 'see' and think as a painter does; basic color theory, its application to pigments and its application to seeing color in nature; proper palette set-up; basics of drawing in support of painting; paint handling and brushwork; and fundamentals of design and pictorial composition.
Experienced painters will be provided with help and guidance with the particular process and approach they choose to undertake.

Although not required, some prior formal instruction in drawing is highly recommended for this class. Experienced students should bring any projects and materials you have on hand and be ready to paint first class. For beginning students a thorough discussion of materials needed and demonstrations will be part of the first class meeting.
