Fred Schlatter: Benicia Wood Sculptor
Local wood carver exhibits his art at car show.
Fred Schlatter has been a woodcarver for nearly 40 years. His carved wood signs can be found in many Benicia and Bay Area locations and around the country.
For the past few years an old love affair has been pushing him in a new and different direction. His love and passion for classic and antique cars has influenced his 'Woodies Series' of sculptures. These pieces are a combination of old auto parts, carved wood and chrome inspired by the ".. love and fascination with the classic cars, locomotives and planes I saw growing up," Schlatter said.
On May 15, three of his pieces were displayed amid the beautiful cars at the Marin Sonoma Concours d'Elegance in San Rafael.

Although the director of the Concours was speaking about cars when he said, "What we seek at this event is elegance – the combined elements of proportion, color and visual appeal,” Schlatter's sculptures fit the bill.
