Great Escape: Have the Ashkenaz Dance Experience
Cross the bridge this Saturday for some zydeco music and free dance lesson.

If you have not been to Ashkenaz Music and Dance Community Center in Berkeley, you're missing out on something truly fun. Ashkenaz is that place that looks like a barn across the street from REI on San Pablo and Gilman. What you can't tell from the outside, is that it's an old-fashioned dance hall.
There is live music six nights a week, many evenings include a free dance lesson when you arrive early. Ashkenaz embraces all cultures and lifestyles together with a variety of live music: African, Balkan, Brazilian, Cajun/Zydeco, Caribbean, Middle Eastern, Reggae, Bluegrass, Swing and other worldly music.
The best part is, people of all ages and from all walks of life come there to hear music and dance. There is no judgment, no pretense and no pressure to look like a supermodel. It's not a pick-up joint or a trendy bar, although you can treat yourself to a beer. The dress code is anything goes- most people just come as they are.
