I-680 Accident Claims Another Life

Accident victim who was flown to trauma center after Thursday afternoon accident died.

A fatal crash was blocking part of northbound Interstate 680 in unincorporated Benicia on Thursday afternoon.  One victim was thrown from the vehicle, two sustained less severe injuries and one person died in the accident, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The solo-vehicle crash was reported shortly before 12:35 p.m. on northbound I-680 about one mile north of Parish Road, CHP officer Eric Anderson said.

The black Ford Explorer carrying a family from Hayward was traveling north when it veered into the center divide while changing lanes. The driver over corrected, causing the truck to roll three times before coming to rest upright in the shrubs between the freeway and Goodyear Road.

Richard A. Sanchez, 68 was driving the vehicle.  Sanchez and passenger Guisanphe Sanchez sustained non-life threatening injuries in the accident and were transported by ambulance to the hospital.

The right rear passenger, Manuel Sanchez was ejected from the vehicle and sustained major injuries and was transported to John Muir Medical Center by medical helicopter. Manuel Sanchez later died from the injuries he sustained in the accident.

The right lane of northbound Highway 680 was blocked while emergency personnel treated the victims.  Anderson said he did not know when it would reopen.
