6,000 Gallons Of Hot Tar Spills On I-780 In Benicia: Authorities
Two trailers ruptured and the tar spilled across the westbound lanes of I-780.

BENICIA, CA — A tanker crash spilled 6,000 gallons of hot tar and sent one person to the hospital Wednesday morning on westbound Interstate 780, according to police.
The police department posted on social media around 9:30 a.m. that the interstate was closed at East Second Street after the tanker overturned and that emergency crews would be at the scene all day. The westbound roadway was expected to be closed for an extended period of time, according to the Benicia Fire Department.
The truck had been transporting 6,000 gallons of hot asphalt tar in two 3,000-gallon trailers, according to the fire department. Both trailers ruptured and the product spilled across the westbound lanes of I-780 and into the culvert. One person was taken to an area hospital.

Local, county and state authorities responded. Police contacted a hazmat team and the state highway patrol was investigating, according to law enforcement.
