Is this thing on? Computer Virus Threatens Internet Users

International Computer Virus initially infected millions

Safeguards put in place to thwart a computer virus known as DNSChanger are set to go out of commission on Monday July 9.  According to a report by CNN, the FBI is scheduled to shut down servers created to support infected computers.  The server shut down was scheduled after the authors of the virus were caught in November.

More than 4 million computers were initially infected with the virus. Once infected, the DNSChanger virus reroutes computers browsing the Web to fake ad sites. The FBI servers allowed infected users to browse the Web without the fake ads. The virus only infects PC users. Mac users are not subject to the threat.

As of 10:00 a.m. Dan Graf of on First Street said he received no calls about the virus from users in Benicia. “I was expecting 100 calls when I came in today, but I only got three and they were all unrelated,” said Graf.
